Cherokee County Fire & Emergency Services responded to a structure fire at approximately 9:45 this morning at the corner of Highway 140 and Mill Street.
According to Cherokee County Fire Investigator, Cheri Collett, “The structure is technically an abandoned residence; however a male in his early sixties has been occupying the space for shelter.” The male was in the structure sleeping at the time of the fire and was awakened by a "popping" sound and discovered fire on the back porch of the home. Fortunately, he escaped without injuries.
The structure is was a total loss. No other injuries were reported and the fire is still under investigation. One lane of Highway 140 was blocked until the operation was complete.
