Cherokee County firefighters are collecting donations this week for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.  Firefighters are holding a “fill the boot” drive at the Bells Ferry Wal-Mart through Wednesday of this week between 1PM and 4PM.

As the greatest contributor to MDA, fire fighters are everywhere in the efforts of MDA to raise money. The International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) is the biggest sponsor of MDA's Labor Day Telethon and it contributed a record breaking $23.5 million in year 2006 as a consequence of the overwhelming enthusiasm and contribution of tens and thousands of firefighters and paramedics across the US and Canada. Firefighters have donated nearly $275 million to MDA since 1954.

As MDA’s largest national sponsor, the IAFF has raised nearly $300 million since the partnership began in 1954. These funds have fueled MDA’s worldwide research program seeking treatments and cures for more than 40 forms of neuromuscular disease. In addition, IAFF fundraisers help make possible a nationwide network of specialized medical clinics, financial assistance with certain types of expensive assistive equipment, support groups, informative publications and, of course, accessible summer camp for kids. 

The Cherokee County firefighters who participated in the event want to thank everyone who contributed to help Jerry’s Kids.
